Smith leads racers in the MVC Championship

Murray State's women's cross country team placed ninth at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Friday.

Freshmen Liz Smith 32nd placend The racers lead the team with a time of 21:34.

The day marked a decline in competition for the racers, as they had finished in the top five four times in a row. Smith's performance gave her the second-best 6K time in school history as she passed seven competitors in the second half of the race. Alyssa Moore is now fifth on the MSU 6K list and Breanna day beat her best time by 18 seconds. Jocelyn host Also had a PR for the MVC meeting.

“Overall, our women’s team had a great race today,” he said Jordan JohnstonMSU coach. “I think they were smart and strategic in the first 2km run and that is what gave them such a strong second half. All but one of our women either improved or maintained their position from the 3km run to the finish, which is really impressive.” Liz Smith And Alyssa Moore were the big MVPs today with their great lifetime PRs and top 10 performances in school history. It's so exciting to see a freshman find immediate success in her college career, and I know she has so much room to grow. I can't wait to see what her future holds. Alyssa finished her freshman cross country season on a somewhat poor note last year and let that unfinished business propel her to a fantastic summer of training, and I'm thrilled to see her work paying off today. And Hope Ware deserves recognition for her race even today. It's an incredible thing that she was allowed to do a lifelong PR exercise after a surgery that left us wondering if she would ever go back to what she once was. She was very patient throughout our demanding care program and trusting in the process. What she has achieved is commendable. Overall, I think the program is heading in the right direction. I hope the team can celebrate their individual success at this championship, but ultimately we have to see this as a step toward what we believe Murray State Cross Country is ultimately capable of.”
