What is at stake?

This is a crucial matchup as the ACC title hunt takes shape, even with teams ranked seventh (SMU) and 11th (Duke) in the preseason. The Mustangs are still undefeated in the ACC and remain in this crowded race led by No. 9 Clemson (5-0) and No. 6 Miami (3-0), while the Blue Devils are right behind that group and No. 19 Pitt (2-0) lurks.

Key match

Duke's defensive front against SMU's offense. The Mustangs rank 11th nationally with an average of 40.7 points per game. This unit will face an opponent that ranks in the top 25 nationally in total defense and scoring defense. And that unit was particularly effective at getting into the backfield, with Duke leading the country in tackles and loss (9.9 per game) and ranking seventh in sacks (3.43).

Players to watch

SMU: QB Kevin Jennings. He has eight touchdown passes and one interception in the last four games and rushed for a career-high 322 yards on touchdown passes of 87, 45 and 38 yards in the first quarter in a 40-10 win at Stanford. The Mustangs are 4-0 since he took over the starting role.

Herzog: RB star Thomas. With Jacquez Moore sidelined due to injury, Thomas has carried the load with physical style. He ran for 88 yards and a touchdown in last week's win over Florida State and has three 100-yard rushing attempts this year.
