South Carolina releases 2024 school report cards

On Tuesday, the South Carolina Department of Education and the Education Oversight Committee released the 2024 SC school report cards for Pinecrest Elementary in Greenwood.

The report cards provide insight into student performance and school quality for the 2023-2024 school year.

Schools receive overall ratings on a 100-point scale and points for academic performance, student progress and graduation rates.

The overall ratings for 2024 compared to 2023 are:

  • Awarded: 230 (2024) | 278 (2023)
  • Good: 316 (2024) | 301 (2023)
  • Average: 477 (2024) | 439 (2023)
  • Below Average: 186 (2024) | 155 (2023)
  • Unsatisfactory: 47 (2024) | 60 (2023)

The number of schools receiving “Outstanding” ratings for academic performance has increased.

In the 2023-24 school year, 54% of students in grades 3-8 met or exceeded expectations in English language arts.

“As South Carolina schools continue to recover from the disruptions of the pandemic, programs like LETRS, based on the science of reading, are proving effective in promoting essential literacy skills in early grades,” said Ellen Weaver, State Superintendent of Education.

Superintendent Weaver praised Pinecrest Elementary for its “Excellent” rating, noting that 87% of students come from low-income backgrounds.

“The performance of schools like Pinecrest Elementary reminds us that while poverty is a challenge, it does not have to be a destiny,” Weaver said. “The faculty, staff and students of these schools are living proof of the progress that is possible with clear vision, purposeful leadership and high expectations for every student.”

She emphasized the importance of improving math skills and tackling chronic absenteeism, which affects 22% of students.
