Stephens Co. residents report heavy storm damage

STEPHENS CO., Okla. (KSWO) – Stephens County residents were woken up early Sunday morning by intense storm activity. Our photographer surveyed the area and noted several downed power lines as well as damage to homes and buildings. The emergency services were already on duty and no injuries had been reported so far.

7News' Cole Brumbelow helped with the cleanup and spoke with some residents.

Denise Pierce is the daughter of a homeowner who was affected by the storm.

“My mother is 81 years old and she heard noises last night and knew there was a storm,” Pierce said, “and she was able to get in the shower and cover herself with blankets and had pads on the floor so she could could hide underneath.” ”

David Allred, a family friend, also commented on the issue.

“I got the call just after two o'clock, I think it was this morning, whenever I got the call, that Marsha had called my mom and said that she had lost the roof of her house and that they could see skylights through the roof “can,” Allred said. “And so we had to wait and let it pass by our house about three miles east of here before we drove here and I got here.”

Allred went on to describe what he saw when he arrived.

“The fire department was already here, I contacted them, they came,” Allred said, “One of the firefighters, Deputy Chief David Bloodworth, was here and rescued Marsha and got her out.”

Pierce thanked the community, church and city for their support.

“The community and the church and this town of Velma are just so supportive of our citizens. Especially the members of the church,” Pierce said. “Church members always help and I’m just very grateful. I am grateful that my mother is safe and I appreciate all the work these men and women have done.”

Allred did the same and thanked the community for their help.

“This community, you can't thank everyone enough for the people here who come out and help in a time like this,” Allred said.
