TCS New York City Marathon 2024: Here's how to watch the race in person – changes to local transportation, road closures for the weekend

NEW YORK (WABC) – The best way to see the TCS New York City Marathon in person is by subway.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has announced the following service changes and updates for the weekend.

Closure of the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge

MTA Bridges and Tunnels, in coordination with the New York City Police Department, will close the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge to all vehicle traffic on Sunday, November 3 between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. pending New York City approval has TCS New York City Marathon. Motorists wishing to travel over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to Brooklyn or Staten Island must use alternative routes.

Additionally, on Saturday, November 2, the upper level of the bridge will be closed to traffic in both directions from 11 p.m. to allow for roadway preparation. Oversized vehicles and vehicles carrying hazardous materials will not be allowed to cross the bridge in any direction after the closure. The Bay Street and Lily Pond Avenue exits on Staten Island will close at 3 a.m. on Sunday, November 3, and reopen around 4 p.m

Watch the race with MTA New York City Transit

The MTA New York City Transit subway and buses will allow customers from all over the city to get to the event. Marathon fans can use the MTA app or mta.info to get last-minute information about subway or bus detours during the race.

New York City Transit will remain in contact with the New York Road Runners Club and provide information regarding any road closures and/or bus detours. The Central Park Transverse Roads at 65th, 79th and 96th streets will be closed for most of the day and buses will not be allowed to cross Fifth Avenue during the race. There will be numerous other bus diversions along the marathon route across the city.

On race day, runners traveling to Staten Island by ferry early in the morning can take the 1 subway to South Ferry, the R to the Whitehall St station, or the 4 to the Bowling Green station and then walk to Whitehall Go to Ferry Terminal. In Staten Island, shuttle buses will transport runners directly from the ferry terminal to School Road at Bay Street on Staten Island.

Please note that due to planned work, northbound C trains will operate between Canal St and 125 St and northbound Line 1 trains will operate between 96 St and 145 St.

To ensure customers can travel smoothly and safely to and from the race, platform controllers will be deployed at stations around the finish area and other key viewing points such as Queensboro Plaza 7nw and Lexington Av/59 St 456nrw. To prevent overcrowding on the stairs and platforms of subway stations, some stairs may be marked as “entrance or exit” only.

The MTA offers customers various options to receive real-time information about planned service changes, as well as 24/7 customer support in their native language.

511 – For those who prefer to contact the MTA by telephone, information can be obtained by calling 511. Individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing may use their preferred service provider's free 711 routing to reach the MTA at 511.

Road and bridge closures

The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, Pulaski Bridge (southbound), Queensboro Bridge (eastbound) and Madison Avenue Bridge (westbound) will be closed for most of the day.

The roads along the route will remain closed until early afternoon. They will gradually reopen as most runners reach the finish line.
