How important are factions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?

All six factions have unique, sometimes conflicting motivations (Gray Wardens exist solely to destroy the Darkspawn, while the Antivan Crows are essentially assassins from the Italian Renaissance). When it comes to choosing a faction, there are some gameplay implications to consider. The faction you choose determines what outfit you wear by default in the Lighthouse, your hub between missions. Finally, depending on which faction you choose, you will also automatically receive two passive benefits that will benefit you in battle.

As with choosing a class, there is no single best faction to choose Dragon Age: The Veil Guardian. You can fight your way through the game regardless of which faction you choose.

However, based on gameplay alone, choosing your faction may depend on which class you are playing as:

If none of these benefits are important to you, You can't go wrong joining the Antivan Crows. The ability to carry an extra potion with you is helpful in almost all situations. Additionally, the Antaam are common enemies in Treviso, a Venice-inspired city where you'll spend a lot of time early in the game. The small damage boost against them certainly helps. They are also by far the most stylish (see above).

Beyond gameplay, there are some narrative aspects you should consider when making your choice. For one thing, if you've done your research and are particularly attracted to a companion, then simply decide on the faction they belong to (see the table above for reference). Dialogue trees give you additional opportunities to build a relationship with them.

Joining either the Shadow Dragons or the Antivan Crows raises the stakes for the first act. One of your first big “yes, this is a BioWare game” decisions is to help the Shadow Dragons or the Antivan crows. According to our testing, belonging to one faction or the other may result in a more emotional cutscene than would otherwise be the case (although there are no obvious differences in gameplay). If you want to up the ante on this first choice, choose one of these two.
