The Cincinnati Bengals plan to use Jermaine Burton on Thursday night against the Ravens

CINCINNATI – Bengals rookie wide receiver Jermaine Burton was completely inactive on Sunday against the Raiders after being a no-call, no-show during their walkthrough on Saturday.

The Bengals play Baltimore on Thursday night in another must-win game as they look to climb back into the playoffs after a 1-4 start to the season.

Do you expect the 23-year-old to play against the Ravens?

“Yes,” head coach Zac Taylor said Monday. “We’re going to push him to do that.”

Burton has two catches for 88 yards this season. He has been completely inactive in two games this year and obviously needs to gain some maturity if he is to reach his full potential.

“It’s just going to be an ongoing process with Jermaine,” Bengals offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher said Monday. “We believe there is a world in which Jermaine Burton is an outstanding professional and an outstanding Bengal. We will continue to do our part to put him in a position to develop there and then Jermaine will have to take over the development. We will keep going.” We know what he can offer us. And that's why we're going to take it week by week.

The Bengals hope to get Tee Higgins back on the field for Thursday's game. Regardless, it would be great to have another field stretcher like Burton.

Will he do his job and take care of the little things? The Bengals believe in what they are doing to put the rookie in position to succeed.

“Huge resources. I would say we do our best to make sure everyone is put in the best situation,” Taylor said. “I won't go into detail about what this all looks like. You have to take my word that we will do our best to ensure that everyone is put in the best possible position to succeed. We will continue to do that.”

The Bengals took Burton in the third round (80th overall) in the 2024 NFL Draft. The rookie has talent, but missing out on an easy fix for him is unacceptable.

Time will tell if he has learned his lesson. It sounds like the Bengals coaching staff is willing to give him another chance. It's up to Burton to seize the opportunity.
