The entire Geary Oklahoma Police Department resigns, confusing the community

The small town of Geary lost its police chief and all of its officers Thursday morning after the chief announced she and the officers were resigning.

According to a statement from the city's public information officer, Terryl Allen, the city has an interim police chief and will receive assistance from both the Blaine County Sheriff's Office and the Canadian County Sheriff's Office. The interim police chief is JJ Stitt, a distant cousin of Gov. Kevin Stitt and a peace officer from Oklahoma and Texas, a police Facebook comment said.

The Oklahoma man called Geary City Hall and was told that Allen would not be working today and that no one at City Hall could comment on the situation. The Oklahoma man was told by police that Stitt would return a request for comment.

According to the city's Facebook page, the police department employed four patrol officers in addition to the police chief.

“We want to let our citizens know that we are continuing as usual,” Allen said in the statement. “If you have an emergency, please call 911 as usual. An officer will then be dispatched to help you. We would also like to express our thanks and appreciation to our former police chief and officers for his service to our community and wish them all the best of luck.”

Why did Geary police resign?

Alicia Ford, the city's former police chief, said in a statement Thursday that resigning from her positions was a difficult decision for her and the other officers. But she said it was the right choice.

“I have seen officers selflessly serve this community and work hard to protect and provide the best quality of service possible,” Ford said in the statement. “They were a great team that was always willing to sacrifice for this community.”

Although Ford didn't say why the resignations occurred, she continued to encourage residents to “get to know your council members,” get involved in city government and attend City Council meetings.

“Your voices are stronger when you stand together as one, and you all have the opportunity to create the change you want to see in your community,” Ford said. “It has been an honor to serve Geary, and I will will forever cherish the people of this community.”

The announcement sent the community into confusion, with dozens of comments raising questions about why the officials would resign and what it might have to do with the City Council.
