Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga was Girona's penalty-saving hero, three times in one game.

The 32-year-old moved to LaLiga last summer after a spell at Fulham, initially joining the club on loan.

Gazzaniga made his ninth start of the season for Girona on Sunday when they hosted Athletic Bilbao at the Estadi Montilivi.

Although he failed to keep a clean sheet in the 2-1 win, the former Spurs man showed his quality by conceding three penalties for Bilbao.

The first came in the first 45 minutes against Alex Berenguer when Gazzaniga parried low on the left.

Inaki Williams was next to fail for Bilbao, although the penalty had to be retaken as the Girona goalkeeper had strayed off the line too early.

However, the visitors failed again from 12 meters away as Ander Herrera also saw his shot parried by Gazzaniga.

It was an excellent goal performance from the Argentine that helped secure a crucial win for Girona, with Cristhian Stuani converting a penalty in stoppage time to secure all three points.

Gazzaniga began his career in Valencia's academy before moving to England to sign for second division side Gillingham in 2011.

After just one season he moved to Southampton following promotion to the Premier League.

However, he only made 23 appearances for the Saints in all competitions and moved to Spurs in 2017.

Gazzaniga has had much more playing time in north London, particularly in the 2019/20 season when he made 18 Premier League appearances while Hugo Lloris was sidelined injured.

But the goalkeeper eventually moved across the capital to Fulham in 2021, helping them to an immediate return to the Premier League.

He only made 15 appearances during his time at Craven Cottage and moved to Girona on loan for the first time in 2022, with his move becoming permanent a year later.

Gazzaniga's appearance on Sunday was his 76th for the club in three seasons and could well be his best yet.
