The governors of Texas and Oklahoma are betting on BBQ and beer for the Red River Showdown

AUSTIN, Texas – The governors of Texas and Oklahoma have made a friendly bet ahead of the annual Red River showdown between the University of Texas Longhorns and the University of Oklahoma Sooners.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott initiated the bet on X, offering to provide Railhead BBQ and Lone Star beer if the Longhorns lost.

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt immediately accepted the challenge and responded with a video message from the Oklahoma State Capitol. “I come from the capital of the great state of Oklahoma,” Stitt said. “And just to remind you that we beat you up last year.”

Stitt, who had a 4-1 record against the Short Horns, countered Abbott's offer with a bet on Oklahoma steaks and Oklahoma craft beer. He also reminded Abbott that the Texas barbecue from last year's bet “was delicious.”

The Governors' bet adds to the long-standing rivalry between the two football programs that dates back to the early 1900s. This year's game is scheduled for Saturday in Dallas, a neutral venue that has hosted the match since 1928.

Stitt ended his video message with a confident “Boomer Sooner, horns down.”
