The Iowa Hawkeyes' massive concerns became clear against Michigan State

The Iowa Hawkeyes scored 40 points in a win over the Washington Huskies last week, giving hope that the offense might turn things around.

But on Saturday against the Michigan State Spartans, it became clear that Iowa's offense wasn't quite clicking yet. And who knows if that will ever be the case.

The Hawkeyes entered halftime trailing 12-0 against Michigan State as Iowa managed just two first downs compared to 15 for the Spartans. Additionally, Michigan State outscored Iowa in total yardage, 250-58.

Quarterback Cade McNamara was just 3 of 9 for 30 yards and missed numerous easy throws that definitely should have been made.

To make matters worse, superstar running back Kaleb Johnson — who went well over 100 yards in five of his first six games this season — carried the ball six times for just 15 yards in what was an absolutely lifeless effort by the Hawkeyes offense.

Johnson also accounted for two of the three catches in the first half, while tight end Luke Lachey recorded the other reception. So once again there were no wide receivers in Iowa.

The Hawkeyes' defense did a great job holding Michigan State to four field goals, typical of Iowa's no-breaks defensive unit.

If Iowa's defense hadn't made some crucial stops in the first two quarters, this game might have been a real laugher at halftime.

The Hawkeyes need to figure something out on offense, and that could ultimately involve benching McNamara in favor of Brendan Sullivan.

We'll see if Iowa makes any changes in the second half.
