The latest forecast calls for 10 inches of rain for Oklahoma

“When it rains, it pours” could literally prove true for Oklahoma next week. The latest forecast for the coming days of rain and severe storms in Oklahoma is for various areas of Oklahoma to receive between 8 and 10 inches of rainfall.

Oklahoma had an exceptionally dry October. A total of 0.34 inches of precipitation fell for the month, the majority of which fell on the second-to-last day of the month. But now Oklahoma is expecting a tsunami of rainfall during the first seven days of November, and that's good news and bad news for Oklahoma.

That's why rain is good news for Oklahoma.

Oklahomans always seem to be praying for rain. And in typical Oklahoma fashion, all prayers for rain are answered at once. There is currently a severe drought in Oklahoma. Several areas of Oklahoma are experiencing extreme drought, while others are unusually dry or experiencing moderate to severe drought.

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor as of Oct. 29, Oklahoma is the only place in the state not experiencing any form of drought. That could definitely change within the next week, which is certainly a good thing given the heavy rains ahead.

Heavy rains and extreme drought mean flooding for Oklahoma.

Although you may want rain during a drought, you don't want a lot at once. That's because the ground is hard and not as absorbent, meaning flash flooding is likely to occur if there is large, heavy rainfall within a few days.

The National Weather Service in Norman expects minor, light and moderate flash flooding to occur in Oklahoma this weekend, particularly Saturday and Sunday. Heavy rain is expected from Saturday night into Monday.

Severe thunderstorms are also expected in Oklahoma this weekend and into next week.

In addition to the risk of flash flooding, Oklahomans also need to be mindful of the weather this weekend as severe thunderstorms are possible. Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible on Saturday afternoon and overnight. Hazards include winds up to 60 miles per hour, hail up to quarter size and very low tornado potential.

Severe thunderstorms are expected on Sunday, with the main threat being large hail, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes.
