The Mass Effect TV series is now officially in development at Amazon

Hey, remember that Mass Effect TV show we learned about back in 2021… with no updates since then? Well, we have good news: Amazon MGM Studios has finally officially started development.

Variety broke the news on Thursday, which also happens to be N7 Day, the annual celebration of all things Mass Effect. Something strange: Despite the timing, it was not officially announced on BioWare's social channels, which previously dampened expectations for N7 Day in the wake of the recent release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. But hey, it still means Mass Effect fans have something to celebrate this N7 Day.

IGN also confirmed the news with Amazon. Daniel Casey (10 Cloverfield Lane) will write and executive produce the series. Other producers include EA/BioWare's Michael Gamble, who is leading development on the next Mass Effect game, and Avi Arad, who is also working on the upcoming live-action film The Legend of Zelda. Karim Zreik/Cedar Tree Productions are also producing under an overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios.

We don't know much about the series other than the names involved. The only plot detail Amazon is keeping quiet at the moment is the fact that it's “based on EA's best-selling sci-fi video game franchise,” so it's not yet known whether it's a direct adaptation or another plot will be in the world of games.

As mentioned, the last we heard about the project in 2021 was that Amazon and EA were close to an agreement to adapt BioWare's popular RPG series. However, in the few years since then, a lot has happened in the world of video game adaptations.

On the Amazon side in particular, Prime Video had great success with the TV adaptation of “Fallout” earlier this year, garnering enough views and critical acclaim to quickly be picked up for a second season. Both Fallout and HBO's The Last of Us earned recognition at the recent Primetime Emmys.

The news also comes as fans eagerly await updates to Mass Effect 5. Most recently, Rolling Stone reported that BioWare was “fully focused on the next Mass Effect” following the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Further details, including a release window, appear to be some way off.
