The New York Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding Officer Thomas Mascia's shooting at Southern State

New York State Police said Monday that it has opened an investigation into last week's shooting of State Trooper Thomas Mascia and investigators are no longer looking for the suspected shooter's vehicle.

“State Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting involving Trooper Mascia that was reported on October 30,” State Police Public Information Director Beau Duffy said in a statement Monday in response to Newsday. “This is an ongoing investigation and further details will not be released at this time.”

Duffy said police “are no longer searching for the Dodge Charger allegedly involved in the incident.”

Duffy's statement comes after a report in the Albany Times-Union newspaper that state police searched Mascia's West Hempstead home Sunday evening as part of an internal investigation into the shooting.

Duffy would not confirm that investigators had searched Mascia's home.

A spokeswoman for the State Troopers Police Benevolent Association said Monday morning that it did not have enough information to provide an immediate comment.

Mascia was shot in his right leg near his knee around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday after he said he drove toward a black car, believed to be a Dodge, that he believed was in the median of the Southern State Parkway was stranded in West Hempstead, police said.

There were no arrests.

Mascia, a state trooper since 2019, was stable after surgery Thursday, police said.

He was released from Nassau University Medical Center Friday afternoon as hundreds of state troopers and Nassau County police officers looked on.

“I'm fine,” Mascia said Friday as he was wheeled outside in a wheelchair, his right leg bandaged.

Mascia's body camera was not activated during the shooting, police said.
