The next threat for severe storms: flooding is taking shape this weekend

The next threat of severe storms and flooding looms this weekend as a new storm system will batter the Plains and Midwest.

The FOX Forecast Center said days of heavy rain and severe storms could lead to flash flooding as well as strong wind gusts and hail. The risk of tornadoes cannot be ruled out either.

The next storm system is already taking shape in the northwest and will reach the Plains by Saturday.

Severe storm will light up Plains this weekend

The storm system will move into the desert southwest on Saturday before spreading across much of the southern and central Plains. The FOX Forecast Center said moderate instability is expected to develop along the western edge of the moist air mass from eastern New Mexico to west Texas.

Thunderstorms that develop in this region are likely to be severe. Supercells could produce large hail and some severe wind gusts of over 60 miles per hour.

The FOX Forecast Center said Sunday that forecasts for severe thunderstorm development from northwest Texas through western and central Oklahoma north into Kansas are reasonably good.

Moderate wind shear and atmospheric energy should support the development of supercells, with the possibility of large hail and wind damage. The threat is expected to persist into the evening as isolated severe storms move eastward across the southern and central Plains.

The series of severe weather events lasting several days will last into Monday. Thunderstorms are expected to develop along a corridor of weak instability from central and north Texas northeast into the Ozarks. Severe storms could threaten in the afternoon and evening hours, with damaging wind gusts and some large hail posing the main threat.

HOW PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICIALS KEEP IN MIND IN SEVERE WEATHER EMERGENCIES

Severe weather may continue until Tuesday and Wednesday next week. However, according to the FOX Forecast Center, this forecast is currently uncertain.

Several inches of rain will fall in over 20 states

A flooding rain event is expected to develop over the southern United States over the weekend and early next week. Several days of widespread and heavy rain will cause flooding problems despite last month's dry conditions.

A flood warning is in effect for portions of southeastern New Mexico and west Texas from Friday evening through Saturday morning.

The FOX Forecast Center said the risk of flooding will increase day by day, especially if the same areas experience heavy rainfall for several days in a row.

Sunday in particular will require a close watch across the Southern Plains to identify more widespread flooding issues.

The multi-day threat will likely continue into early next week, spreading northeast across the Midwest in this pattern, with deep moisture remaining in place.
