The Spurs rookie sees a solid showing in his second start

Since the Spurs were without numerous players due to injuries, more specifically three starters, rookie Stephon Castle was brought into the starting lineup for the last few games.

On Thursday night, Castle had perhaps the best professional game of his young career, scoring 14 points, shooting 6-for-11, adding six assists to zero turnovers and grabbing three rebounds. Overall, he finished a starter-high +12, leading the team to a 13-point win over the Portland Trail Blazers.

Castle was drafted No. 4 in the last draft and was a project pick for the Spurs, a long-term development bet as opposed to a player who was expected to be impactful right out of the gate. But the former Husky is already looking ahead of schedule.

At 1.90 meters tall, his defense has integrated into the NBA as well as many expected from the start. And his offense appears to be improving in just a few games. So far, Castle is averaging just over six points, with a few rebounds and assists for every piece.

His efficiency wasn't there at any of the three levels, but he seems to be able to keep up with his physicality, decision-making ability and other outstanding attributes.

Thursday's game also offered a glimpse of the playmaker Castle could have if all goes well. At UConn, he served more as a connecting winger, but the Spurs hope he develops into the point guard of the future.

Castle and San Antonio are back in action on Saturday, November 9th with a match against the Utah Jazz.
