The Steelers let Russell Wilson cook – how did it taste?

The Pittsburgh Steelers made one of the most aggressive moves of the season, trading Russell Wilson at quarterback for Justin Fields. While they named Wilson the starter, Fields went 4-2 in his absence. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin raised difficult Criticism for this decision, but after one game it seems justified.

So the Steelers let Russell Wilson cook, as today's youth would say. Feel free to swap your favorite youth language here, if you prefer something else, I hasten to add. It doesn't change the question: How did it go?

Well, we all saw that it started off difficult, with a 2v8 opening game and some big mistakes and misunderstandings. But Wilson and the offense cleaned up as the game went on, and he ended up setting a Steelers record. With 264 passing yards, he threw for more yards than any other player in their Steelers debut in history. Skillful, I'm sure, but is he the only Hall of Famer to debut with a Hall of Fame reputation who wasn't already destined for a wheelchair?

Still, Russell Wilson basically did what the Steelers asked him to do. He won, and the Steelers ended up winning comfortably. He played his part, especially in the second half. Sure, he had a gimme touchdown on a drive that started at the one-yard line. Still, they scored 37 points in the win, which is obviously a rarity here.

Lest we forget, let's just talk about one game. Russell Wilson will of course start next week, but we don't know what he will look like. On paper, the Jets have a better defense than the Giants, and he's picked up some rust, so one can hope he looks even better.

But given the small sample size we currently have, what do the Steelers look like with Wilson as their franchise quarterback? Are they suddenly a Super Bowl contender? Will they at least have a legitimate shot at the AFC North title and a push into the playoffs? I mean, that's what he's here for, right?

The Steelers' 2024 season is underway after another disappointing year that ended with a first-round playoff loss. They've had a long offseason since the Buffalo Bills put them out of their misery in January. There are positive signs, but things could get out of hand at any moment.

The biggest question on the team's mind is the quarterback question. Will Russell Wilson get his job back when he's healthy or will Justin Fields steal it?? How will the team proceed? the depth chartthat is surprisingly still changing?

After weeks of camp and preseason games, the regular season is here. The Steelers made numerous moves through signings and trades – and releases. More than usual, they seemed more comfortable creating holes and confident in their ability to fill them. Some were able to fill them, others not so much. However, now that we have so many pieces to the puzzle, we just need to ask a new set of questions.
