The White House releases medical report on Vice President Kamala Harris

The White House releases medical report on Vice President Kamala Harris

The White House released a report from Vice President Kamala Harris' doctor on Saturday saying she was in “excellent health.”

The report, previewed by a senior Harris campaign aide, comes as the 59-year-old Democratic nominee seeks to compare herself to former President Trump, 79, who has remained silent on his recent record health status.

“Vice President Harris remains in good health,” wrote her Army doctor, Dr. Joshua R. Simmons. “She possesses the physical and mental resilience necessary to successfully discharge the duties of the presidency, including those as chief executive, head of state and commander in chief.”

Aides to Harris encouraged her office to release her medical history and health information to shine a spotlight on Trump's health and mental functioning, as the 78-year-old Republican candidate would become the oldest president to serve as a senior aide at the end of his potential second term.

President Biden81, withdrew from the 2024 presidential race in July amid pressure from the Democratic Party over concerns about his advanced age and visible fatigue. Since then, the Democrats have tried to use their former electoral vulnerability to go on the offensive against Trump.

During an interview in August with CBS NewsTrump insisted he would be “happy” to release his medical records, noting at the time that he had received a “perfect score” on a recent medical exam. He has not done this yet.

The letter from Dr. Simmons calls Harris' last medical exam in April 2024 “unremarkable.” The vice president has no major health problems and “maintains a healthy, active lifestyle,” including daily exercise, despite her busy schedule. Harris eats a “very healthy diet,” doesn’t smoke and drinks “only occasionally and in moderation,” according to her doctor.

“Vice President Harris is a healthy 59-year-old woman whose medical history includes seasonal allergies and urticaria,” the letter said. Urticaria is a common skin condition that can cause itchy, red, raised bumps or welts on the skin. It can be triggered by certain foods, medications or stress. Harris takes Allegra to treat her allergies and urticaria and has been undergoing allergen immunotherapy (ATI) for three years.

Other details from the report include that Harris is nearsighted and wears corrective contact lenses, that she has a family history of colon cancer (her mother died of colon cancer in 2009), and that she is “up to date on all preventative care recommendations, including… is colonoscopies and annual mammograms.”

The decision to release Harris' medical information came after a New York Times report alleged that Trump had not been transparent about his own health, even after telling him at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania last July a bullet grazed the head of a suspected assassin.

During his first White House campaign in 2016, Trump did not release his medical records, the report said. The Trump White House also did not release detailed updates on his condition following a COVID diagnosis in 2020, with reports suggesting the president was sicker than his doctors said publicly, the report said.

“In 2024, a few days before he became the official Republican presidential candidate for the third time, he was hit by a bullet from a suspected assassin, but his campaign did not report his condition, release hospital records, or appoint emergency doctors to treat him.” I am available for an interview,” the report said. It also quotes several medical experts who express concerns that Trump could enter the Oval Office in a second term with several “potentially concerning issues.”

The last Trump health update came in November 2023, when his personal doctor, Bruce Aronwald, said in a letter that Trump's “general health is excellent.”

“His physical exams were within normal limits and his cognitive exams were exceptional,” Aronwald wrote.

In response to a request for comment, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung referred to the letter released by Aronwald and reports from former White House physician Ronny Jackson, R-Texas, who treated Trump after the failed assassination attempt in Pennsylvania.

“President Trump has voluntarily provided updates from his personal physician as well as detailed reports from Dr. Ronny Jackson who treated him after the first assassination attempt,” Cheung said.

“Everyone has concluded that he is in perfect and excellent health to become commander-in-chief. “He has an extremely busy and active campaign schedule unlike any other in political history, while Kamala Harris has been unable to keep up with the demands of the campaign and the revelations.” In everyday life, she is completely unfit to be President of the United States because she supposedly doesn't have the stamina of President Trump.
