Some Social Security recipients are soon set to receive the first of three checks — yes, three — in November.

It's not a mistake, just an oddity of the calendar. Those who also receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will receive three checks in November.

Here are the facts: SSI recipients should receive their November payment on November 1st. Thereafter, SSI recipients will receive their regular Social Security retirement benefits on a Wednesday in November, based on the Social Security Administration's usual schedule.

Later in the month, SSI recipients will also receive their December SSI check. The reason? These checks are typically issued on the first business day of each month. Because December 1 is a Sunday, December SSI payments will be distributed on Friday, November 29, according to the SSA calendar.

Why should SSI recipients receive two checks in November?

More than 7.4 million Americans receive SSI, which provides payments beyond traditional Social Security benefits to people with limited sources of income. Because of the way the days of the month unfold in December, SSI recipients will receive their November payment on November 1 and their December monthly payment slightly earlier, on Friday, November 29, according to the SSA calendar.

The specifics of the SSI schedule will remain in place until early 2025

The calendar quirks don't end there. Because the first business day of January 2025 is New Year's Day, a federal holiday, SSI recipients will also receive their January payment earlier. The exhibition will take place on December 31, 2024.

Then, according to the 2025 SSA Calendar, SSI recipients will receive their February 2025 payment on January 31, 2025 and their March 2025 payment on February 28, 2025. This means that SSI recipients will not receive a payment in the calendar month March.

SSI recipients will also receive two checks in May, with the monthly SSI payment issued on May 1 and the June SSI payment issued on May 30, according to the SSA calendar. This results in SSI beneficiaries not receiving a payment in the calendar month of June.

This happens again in the month of August: SSI recipients receive two checks – the September payment is scheduled to be made on August 29 – but no payment in the calendar month of September.

What is Supplemental Security Income or SSI?

According to the SSA website, SSI provides monthly payments to people with limited income, who are age 65 or older, who are blind, or who have a qualifying disability – this includes children with a qualifying disability. For adults, SSI is generally intended for those who earn no more than $1,971 per month from work. If you believe you may be eligible for SSI, you can begin the application process on the Social Security website.
