Todd Bowles explains the decision not to go for a two-pointer late in the OT loss against the Chiefs

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers fell to 4-5 on Monday night after losing a hard-fought rainout battle to the Kansas City Chiefs 30-24 in overtime.

After the game, reporters quickly asked Bowles about his decision not to go for a two-point conversion after the Buccaneers scored a touchdown with 27 seconds left in the fourth quarter to make the score 24-23.

“Very slightly,” Bowles said when asked how much he thought about choosing two. “We wanted to go into extra time. Due to the wet conditions on the pitch we felt we had to go into extra time. We had our chances, but we lost the game.”

When asked if analytics played a role in his decision not to keep the offense on the field, Bowles responded that it did not.

It's certainly an interesting excuse from Bowles, considering the Buccaneers had just driven down the field for a touchdown on the same wet field. A two-pointer would have given Tampa Bay a 25-24 lead, but Bowles opted to use the kicking unit and go for the tie.

The Buccaneers did not get the ball back after that decision. Despite fending off a Chiefs drive in regulation, Kansas City won the coin toss in overtime and scored a game-winning touchdown on the first drive of overtime.
