Top-35 recruit Xavion Staton, 7-foot center, commits to BYU

Xavion Statonone of the top centers in the class of 2025, has committed to this BYUhe said to On3.

The four-star senior from Sierra Vista High in Las Vegas is 7-0 Kevin Young and the Cougars over Michigan, UNLV and Stanford.

Staton is the No. 31 overall prospect, No. 3 center and No. 1 recruit out of Nevada in the 2025 cycle On3 industry ranking – a weighted average that takes into account all four major recruiting media companies.

Staton is BYU's second commitment of the cycle and joins the three-star PF Chamberlain Burgess (No. 153 nationally).

Staton on his commitment to BYU

Xavion Staton discussed his decision with On3.

“The overall impression is right for me with the proximity to home and the NBA development,” said Staton. “It is important for me to be able to take part in an NBA program together with the employees. It’s a place where I can enjoy life without worrying about distractions, so I can focus on getting better while having fun.”

What led to his belief in Coach Young and the coaching staff?

“Coach Kevin Young is really building something in Provo and the fact that he was in the league before coming to BYU plays a role because he knows what it takes to get there. I got on well with the staff and felt comfortable being around them, as did my family, which was extremely important. Coach Young's style of play with the Suns was exactly my style. Rim runner, lob threat, defensive versatility and floor running. Everything else will fall into place, but he appreciates what I work hard for and that means a lot for my fit in the program too.”

Staton has a message for BYU fans.

“Provo Nation, I look forward to playing in an environment like yours. Let's go! 🤙🏽”

Scouting report

“The standout part of Xavion Staton’s game is his defensive ability. He is an excellent shot blocker with natural feel. He has very long arms with high set shoulders, a long standing reach and a quick twitch pop. There is an intimidation factor that he brings over the course of a game. On offense, Staton needs reps that continue to work on his feel for the game. He's currently a dunker spot, ahead of the rim-type big. He is considered a true 7-footer and has natural touch beyond the arc, but he needs the reps to work on balance, feet and weight. It has a unique defensive ability and is perhaps the best rim protector in its class. This will keep him high in the rankings and give him a lot of exposure. “He plays with a good motor and generally impacts the game when he’s in the game.” – Jamie Shaw of On3
