UMD drops first game of season, loses 3-2 at Colgate – Duluth News Tribune

DULUTH – Third-seeded Minnesota Duluth failed to recover in the third period for the second straight season, falling to No. 7 Colgate 3-2 in nonconference play on Saturday at the Class of 1965 Arena in Hamilton, New York.

Fifth-year senior wingers Olivia Wallin and Clara Van Wieren scored for the Bulldogs (3-1), while sophomore forward Kaia Malachino scored two goals for the Raiders (2-2), the also scored a goal from junior forward Sara Stewart.

For the second straight year, UMD initially took a 1-0 lead in Hamilton, but trailed 1-2 heading into the third period. Stewart scored 1:46 into the third period to create the two-goal lead that UMD was unable to overcome despite Wallin's third-period power play goal.

Two of Colgate's three goals came on the power play as the Raiders finished 2-4 on Saturday after going 1-6 on Friday night. UMD was 1-4 on the power play Saturday and 2-9 in the series.

Sophomore goaltender Eve Gascon made 33 saves on 36 shots for the Bulldogs, who face No. 1-ranked Wisconsin in WCHA play on Saturday and Sunday at LaBahn Arena in Madison, Wisconsin.

Senior goalie Hannah Murphy made 42 saves on 44 shots for Colgate on Saturday.
