Oregon State's resilience will be tested this week as it looks to overcome last week's disastrous loss to Nevada.

Things don't get much easier for the Beavers (4-2) this week as they host a surging UNLV squad that is 5-1 on the year and finished just outside the top five in the latest US LMB Football Coaches' Poll.

“Very talented team on both sides of the ball – very experienced team on both sides of the ball,” Oregon State head coach Trent Bray said. “They play fast defensively. They are fearless. They leave. They have some really good players; the center back they have (Jackson Woodard), really. It's fun to watch. I enjoy watching UNLV on defense. “On offense, they have a lot of explosive talent. They will do anything to be superior to you at points of attack.

“So we have to keep going.”

Oregon State vs. UNLV score updates

With Oregon State in desperate need of a defensive stop, Jack Kane snagged an interception in the third period and gave the Beavers the ball back to their own 46 with 1:43 left.

Oregon State kept hope alive with a quick scoring drive that Anthony Hankerson capped off with a 3-yard touchdown run. The Beavers then scored a two-point conversion when Gevani McCoy found Jermaine Terry II, sealing the game at one point.

After receiving a short field, UNLV scored another rushing touchdown. This time, Hajj-Malik Williams found White III for a 22-yard touchdown throw.

Trailing 26-17, Oregon State brought the ball to midfield and appeared to be in the midst of a promising drive. But on their next three snaps, the Beavers lost yards on a botched trick play, Trent Walker dropped a pass and Gevani McCoy was sacked for a hard tackle.

Oregon State had to punt.

Caden Chittenden hit his fourth field goal of the night – a 29-yarder – with 13:28 left in the fourth quarter to give the Rebels a two-point lead.

Late in the third quarter, Oregon State star safety Skyler Thomas fell on the field and was treated by trainers for an apparent injury. Thomas was helped back to the sideline.

Entering this week, Thomas had played more snaps than any other Oregon State defensive back this season. He is one of the last remaining healthy starters in the Beavers' dilapidated secondary.

The Rebels wasted no time taking advantage of the Beavers' lost fumble. UNLV took its first lead of the night when Hajj-Malik Williams hit a 9-yard keeper to make it 23-17.

Oregon State had great luck with turnovers most of the season. But the Beavers got a shock midway through the third quarter when Anthony Hankerson lost a fumble and UNLV took over at OSU's 18-yard line.

Gevani McCoy is a 7-for-10 passer for 112 yards and also has 89 yards and two touchdowns on six carries. Darrius Clemons led Oregon State with 57 yards on two receptions, and Anthony Hankerson had 41 yards on 12 carries.

For UNLV, Hajj-Malik Williams is 7 of 13 passing for 119 yards. He also has 45 rushing yards and a touchdown on seven carries.

The Rebels forced Oregon State to punt with 16 seconds left in the half while the Beavers were secured at their own 26-yard line. Ricky White III blocked Josh Green's punt and the Rebels recovered at the OSU 37.

UNLV then quickly moved into field goal territory and kicked a 34-yard field goal to cut Oregon State's lead to 17-16 at the end of the half.

UNLV responded with an explosive drive of its own. Hajj-Malik Williams found Jacob De Jesus for a 43-yard reception to get the Rebels rolling. Then Williams capped the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run down the right side to make it a one-score game.

Oregon State quarterback Gevani McCoy turned on the Jets for a 71-yard touchdown run to give the Beavers' offense a much-needed spark.

Oregon State's defense turned in another strong performance in the red zone to stop another promising UNLV push.

Sai Vadrawale provided strong coverage on a pass over the middle on 3rd-and-9 to drive the Rebels offense off the field. Caden Chittenden kicked a 34-yard field goal, cutting the OSU lead to 10-6.

Gevani McCoy found the end zone of a QB keeper on 4th-and-1 for the first touchdown of the night.

The Beavers rushed for 75 yards on 12 plays and spent 6:39 minutes of game time on that series.

Van Wells, Oregon State's starting player, was not on the field for the opening drive; Luka Vincic started in his place.

But Wells was the focal point on the Beavers' second drive.

Oregon State's defense staged a goal-line stand to drive the UNLV offense off the field after driving 82 yards in 15 plays. Caden Chittenden came off the bench and hit a 20-yard field goal for the Rebels to tie the game at 3-3.

The Beavers roll with Exodus Ayers and Andre Jordan Jr. as the starting cornerback combination for UNLV's opening offense. Oregon State is still without starter Jaden Robinson and veteran rotation player Kobe Singleton due to injury.

The Beavers benefited from some explosive players on their first drive — including a 44-yard catch-and-run by Darrius Clemons that pushed OSU to the UNLV 4-yard line.

But Oregon State had to settle for a 20-yard field goal from Everett Hayes that gave them a 3-0 lead.

Oregon State's starting offense in their opening series was as follows (LR): Gerad Christian-Lichtenhan, Joshua Gray, Luke Vincic, Flavio Gonzalez and Grant Starck.

Starting center Van Wells is out.

Oregon State is dealing with a barrage of injuries on both sides.

  • Star running back Jam Griffin is not with the rest of the position group during warmups. He will miss the second game in a row.
  • Starting player Van Wells doesn't do any warm-ups. Luka Vincic works in the middle of the first team's offensive line.
  • Full-back Zakaih Saez will not be available to play today. He is struggling with a concussion.
  • Oregon State only has six healthy cornerbacks on the field to warm up: Andre Jordan Jr., Mason White, Sai Vadrawale III, Exodus Ayers, Drake Vickers and Milan Clark. Jaden Robinson, Kobe Singleton and Josiah Johnson are all out.
  • Starting defensive tackle Thomas Collins is not in uniform; he will miss his second straight game. Tevita Pome'e and Tyree Blake are doing warm-ups and appear to be in top form.
  • Senior safety Alton Julian is doing warm-ups for the first time this season. He missed the entire 2022 season and most of the 2023 season.

CORVALLIS — When Ryan Gunderson was in the midst of his own playing career at Oregon State, longtime Beavers head coach Mike Riley often delivered a simple, succinct message to the program's quarterbacks.

“When you win, don’t overlook what you would think about when you lose,” Gunderson recalled.

For OSU's first-year offensive coordinator, the opposite of that statement was also true this week, as Gunderson works to separate the positives and negatives of the performance Beavers starter Gevani McCoy delivered in last year's 42-37 road loss to Nevada Saturday delivered.

On one hand, McCoy was as effective at moving the ball downfield as he has ever been this season. The redshirt junior completed 27 of 42 passes for a season-high 348 yards and a touchdown.

But he also threw four interceptions — including a game-winning pick-six in the fourth quarter as the Beavers worked on a comeback.
