US election 2024: Important swing states

Seven swing states, including Georgia and Michigan, will decide the election. The road to the White House actually leads through some critical battleground states that will play an outsized role on Election Day.

According to a report in The Telegraph, Pennsylvania, with its 19 electoral votes, proved to be a critical state in the last presidential election, and 2024 will be no different. To win the presidency, Trump must also flip Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin and Nevada, which Joe Biden narrowly won in 2020.

When will we find out the result of the US election?

The winner of the election is expected to be announced in a few days. In 2020, the result for Joe Biden was announced four days after the November 3 vote, after Pennsylvania's result was certified. The state provided Biden with 20 Electoral College votes, exceeding the 270 votes needed for victory. In 2016, Hillary Clinton conceded to Trump the morning after the election.

By January 6, 2025, electoral votes will be counted by Congress in the official declaration of the winner of the 2024 U.S. presidential election. States must certify their results in either November or December after Election Day. The Electoral College voting process ensured that there were riots in 2021 when Donald Trump's supporters stormed the Capitol.
