With the 2024 US presidential election all but decided, JD Vance emerged victorious alongside Donald Trump as the Republican vice presidential candidate. Usha Vance will make history as first Indian-born Second Lady of the United States.
Usha was born to Indian parents who immigrated to the United States. She grew up in San Diego and later attended Yale University, where she met JD Vance. They got married in 2014.
JD Vance has often spoken of his wife Usha with deep admiration and gratitude, particularly highlighting her central role in both his personal life and his political career. In an interview in 2024, he described Usha as “an amazing person” who had been “incredibly supportive” of him throughout his political journey.
Vance praised her for her intellect and strength, saying, “She is always there for me, not only as a wife, but as a sounding board and source of strength when things get tough.”
Reflecting on her background, Vance noted, “I’m married to one Indian-American. They make really good vegetarian food,” acknowledging how her heritage has led him to new cultural experiences. He also expressed his admiration for her sacrifice, recounting how Usha gave up her successful legal career to support his political ambitions: “She told me, 'If we do this, we'll make it a family adventure.'” Vance did made it clear that a large part of his political success was due to Usha's support, saying, “Without her none of this would be possible.”
