US Marshals are involved in a shooting while arresting a suspect at Sugar House

SALT LAKE CITY — Members of the U.S. Marshals Service were involved in a shooting in the Sugar House neighborhood Monday afternoon, and Salt Lake City police are investigating.

SLCPD said the incident involved a fugitive task force. It took place near Elm Avenue and Lincoln Street (approximately 2150 South and 950 East).

Although details of the incident were not immediately known, officials said one person was in custody and there was no threat to the public's safety. A later update from SLCPD says the suspect remains in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No one else was injured.

SLCPD said its officers were not involved but were called to the scene to assist only after the fact, around 4:20 p.m. The department is responsible for investigating the “critical incident involving officers.”

Officials said a traffic stop was part of the incident, and photos from the scene show a car that appears to have gone over the curb and crashed into some bushes.

FOX 13 News spoke with Francisco Rodriguez, a manager at Burt Brothers near where this incident occurred. He said the suspect was the ex-husband of one of the employees at the site and showed up at the store before the incident. He said the man was told to leave several times.

Rodriguez said the suspect eventually drove away while several unmarked cars followed him. He said the suspect tried to walk through the Smith's parking lot and ended up crashing into a light pole.

“It looked like they threw some kind of stun bomb or something under the car (and) started shooting. I heard a series of shots, at least 15 to 20 shots, and then a lot of smoke and screaming,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez told FOX 13 News the incident occurred within about 5 to 10 minutes.

“I've never experienced anything like this, such an intense event with so many people in public walking around and stuff. So it was pretty crazy, and I think they did a great job of containing it and keeping everyone safe,” Rodriguez said.

The suspect's identity has not been released at this time.

Once the investigation is complete, Salt Lake City Police will forward the case to the District Attorney's Office.
