With some momentum, UTEP travels to Louisiana tonight to take on the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.

My analysis

After losing by double digits in all but one of its six losses this year, UTEP finally bounced back with a 30-21 victory over the FIU Panthers.

One of the weaker running teams in the conference, the Miners had 211 yards and two touchdowns against the Panthers.

That overshadowed the mediocre performance of Skyler Locklear, who regained his starting spot after Cade McConnell's injury. Locklear was just 14 of 23 for 161 yards with a TD and an interception.

There will be no hiding place on Tuesday as the Miners face one of the best defenses in the conference.

Louisiana Tech manages just 104.2 yards rushing per contest, leading the C-USA and third-best with 23.5 points per game.

They should return home with something to prove after being upset at New Mexico State as double-digit point favorites and losing 33-30 in double OT.

Despite the loss, Evan Bullock threw for 233 yards and two scores. Since being installed as a starter against FIU three weeks ago, he has led the Bulldogs to their two most successful games in back-to-back weeks.

On the year, Louisiana Tech scores 25.5 points per game. They do much of their damage through the air and rank 43rd nationally in passing yards.

That will be an important game on Tuesday – as the Miners are allowing just 207 yards per game, which is 55th in college football.

In this direct duel it was only the Bulldogs who have won nine of the last ten games, including the 24:10 away win last year.

UTEP is balanced when you look at the point distribution and is 5-5-0. However, almost all of the Miners' coverages at 14.5 points or higher are also big underdogs.

The Miners posted a 6.5-point margin of victory in 2021, their only win in the last decade.

With a top-notch defense and an offense bouncing back under Bullock, look for the Bulldogs to send the Miners back to the losing zone.

Skyler Locklear Under 215.5 yards

Tru Edwards can land at any time

Locklear looked better than when he was on the bench, but the second-year pivot is still a bit shaky, even if Louisiana Tech's passing D is mid-pack in Conference USA.

He threw for 161 yards or less three times in a row and hasn't topped 200 yards since a 28-10 loss to Liberty.

Locklear will be forced to throw the ball against the Bulldogs and I don't see the many positives he needs to be successful.

One player who has been making it lately is Bulldogs senior wideout Tru Edwards.

He caught nine receptions for 110 yards and two scores against New Mexico State after having 6 catches, 127 yards and 1 touchdown against Middle Tennessee.

He's become Bullock's go-to guy, and if the chances of him finding paydirt again are good, I'm happy to add that to a parlay.
