Vucic proposed a referendum for citizens to decide whether he should resign ᐉ News from Fakti.bg – World

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic proposed a consultative referendum for citizens to decide whether he should remain in office. According to him, the demonstrators actually want him to resign after the collapse of the visor at the train station in Novi Sad on Friday, in which 14 people died, Tanjug reported.

In an interview with Serbian TV channel Happy last night, Vucic indicated that he would immediately resign and that presidential and parliamentary elections would be scheduled in the country if more than 50 percent of citizens voted for his dismissal from the presidency.

Late last week, opposition parties, activists and citizens in Serbia protested and called for resignations, including the resignation of Construction Minister Goran Vesic. A new protest is planned for today near the train station in Novi Sad.

Vesic announced last night that he would officially resign today, emphasizing that he was not taking the blame for the tragedy but was stepping down as a responsible person.

The Serbian president pointed out that those who have been protesting in recent days demanding that responsibility for the tragedy in Novi Sad be determined are in fact demanding his resignation. According to him, the protesters do not mention him by name because they know he has no authority in this department, but in fact “they want his head.”

“I offer it to you on a casserole. Don't do business with (Serbian Prime Minister) Milos Vucevic. It won't happen. I offer you a solution. I offer you a great victory. In Parliament we have a majority of 126 votes. Give us your 70, 80 (votes in parliament – editor's note) and we will ask for the opinion on a referendum on the release of Aleksandar Vucic,” said the Serbian president.

He said he would resign if 50 percent of the population expressed such a wish in a referendum.

“This solves all your problems – you are facing new presidential and parliamentary elections,” he added.

In an interview for TV “Happy”, Vucic confirmed that responsibility for the accident in Novi Sad was being sought and that it had to be “clear and unambiguous”.

“What is important is, firstly, our attitude towards the victims, secondly, the support and help for the families of the victims and thirdly – responsibility.” This responsibility should be primarily of a criminal nature,” emphasized the Serbian President.

The train station in Novi Sad was officially opened in July this year after three years of renovation. Authorities allege that the repairs did not cover the concrete fascia above the station's main entrance.
