Warnings for flooding, dangerous seas and dangerous currents

The National Weather Service has issued multiple warnings as unsettled weather sets in for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands in early November, with conditions conducive to heavy rain, flash flooding, dangerous seas and dangerous rip currents.

Meteorologists expect favorable environmental factors combined with abundant moisture to create ideal conditions for persistent showers and thunderstorms. Rainfall amounts are estimated at 1 to 3 inches in the U.S. Virgin Islands and 2 to 4 inches or more in parts of eastern Puerto Rico.

With soils already saturated, the flash flood watch will remain active through Saturday morning due to a high chance of moderate to heavy rainfall. These conditions are expected to result in rapid river flooding, potentially causing some rivers to exceed flood stage. There is also a significant risk of landslides in areas with steep terrain.

Other hazards include dangerous sea conditions, with northerly waves and strong winds creating life-threatening rip currents. The small craft, high risk of rip currents and strong surf advisories remain in effect throughout the weekend, warning against recreational and navigational activities in affected waters.

Weather conditions could improve on Saturday and Sunday, but forecasters warn that saturated soils and elevated watercourses could mean that even short periods of moderate to heavy rain could lead to additional flooding.

Officials urge residents planning outdoor activities to closely monitor the forecast and stay informed of any updates, as hazardous conditions will continue to exist in certain areas throughout the weekend.
