Whether you're a seasoned veteran or a first-time voter, it's good to familiarize yourself with the rules and find new places to learn more about the candidates.

The polls will be busy on election day and experts ask for patience.

On election night, Tennesseans shouldn't have to wait too long for results. Election officials say the Volunteer State's results should be available around 11 p.m., but of course that varies. Long lines at the end of the day will delay vote counting until everyone has cast their vote.

Here's what you should know before you vote on Tuesday.

What day is election day?

When is the election? It's Tuesday, November 5th.

What are the polling locations in Knoxville and Knox County?

First, determine your polling location at sos.tn.gov/govotetn. You can search by your name or address.

You can only go to your specific pilling location on Election Day, November 5th.

When do the polling stations open? What are voting times?

Polls open at 8:00 a.m. ET and close at 8:00 p.m. ET.

In the Central Time Zone in Middle and West Tennessee, polls are open from 7:00 a.m. CT to 7:00 p.m. CT.

What happens if the polling station closes while I'm waiting in line?

Lines could be long on election day! As long as you are in line before the polls close, you can cast your vote and it will be counted. Stay in line to exercise your right to vote.

Can you register to vote on Election Day?

No, not in Tennessee.

Can I still receive a postal vote?

No, this deadline has expired.

Anyone who has a postal ballot can only submit the stamped postal ballot to the district returning officers by post. Voters can choose between USPS, FedEX and UPS, but personal delivery is not permitted.

Where are ballot boxes?

Ballot boxes are not legal in Tennessee because mail-in ballots must be sent by mail (use a stamp!).

But there is a last-minute option on Election Day. Knox County voters who have not yet mailed their ballots can drop them off at two post offices until Nov. 5 at 4 p.m.

  • Weisgarber Post Office, 1237 Weisgarber Road

Can I cast a provisional vote?

Yes. If you forget to bring your ID or your registration information is questioned, you can cast a provisional vote. You have two business days after Election Day to go to your local election commission office and present your ID or proper registration.

The Knox County Election Commission's main office is located at the Old Courthouse at 300 Main St., Suite 229 in downtown Knoxville.

Can I wear political t-shirts when voting?

It depends on.

T-shirts or buttons that specifically promote a candidate or issue on the ballot are not permitted at the polling place or within the 100-foot buffer zone.

For example, a voter may not wear a MAGA hat because the slogan is so closely associated with former President Donald Trump.

Can I use my phone at polling stations?

Voters can use mobile devices to make decisions, such as when they write down their list of candidates in an electronic note or when they have a question about a candidate. Poll workers can request that the device be in sleep mode.

Can I take photos at polling stations?

No. Voters are not permitted to make phone calls or take photos or videos at the polling station. This includes selfies.

Journalists can take photos and videos.
