Fall brings football, cooler temperatures and the eternal question: When will the time change?

Across the U.S. — even in states like Arizona, where most states don't observe Daylight Saving Time — people are wondering when the clocks will go back and add an extra hour of daylight for the next four months, until Daylight Saving Time 2025 on Sunday begins. March 9th.

Here's where to find out when the time change will happen in fall 2024, whether we'll gain an hour in November, and why some parts of Arizona observe daylight saving time and others don't.

When does the time change in autumn?

The time change will take place on Sunday, November 3rd at 2 a.m. Then Daylight Saving Time ends in 2024 and clocks go back to 1 a.m. in most parts of the country

Will we win an hour in November?

Yes. When clocks go back one hour on November 3, people living in states that observe daylight saving time will get an extra hour of daylight.

Why Arizona Doesn't Observe Daylight Saving Time

Arizona does not observe daylight saving time, primarily due to its hot climate.

By observing standard time year-round, Arizona avoids extending daylight hours into the summer evenings when temperatures reach their peak. This should help reduce energy consumption for the air conditioning and make the evenings more pleasant.

According to the Pima County Public Library, Arizona opted out of daylight saving time in 1968 and has followed Mountain Standard Time year-round ever since. The only exception is the Navajo Nation, which observes daylight saving time consistent with other parts of its territory, extending into Utah and New Mexico.
