White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf writes letter to fans about 'embarrassing season': 'You all deserve better'

It was a banner week for beleaguered MLB team owners, who wrote letters to their angry fans.

On Sunday, two days after the White Sox set the MLB record for losses in a season with 121, the team released a letter from owner Jerry Reinsdorf in which he called the season a “failure” and “embarrassing” and apologized thanked fans for continuing to support the team and outlined “bright spots” and next steps for the organization.

The White Sox have been in free fall since their last playoff appearance in 2021, and fans will be understandably skeptical of Reinsdorf's promise to turn things around. The White Sox have never been big spenders, and general manager Chris Getz seemed to indicate last week that that wouldn't change anytime soon.

Instead, Reinsdorf appears to be focused on internal improvements, which include finding a new manager. The White Sox fired Pedro Grifol on August 8 after less than two years at the helm, shortly after a 21-game losing streak. Former MLB player Grady Sizemore has been named interim manager and is expected to be considered for the full-time job.

Reinsdorf also tried to draw attention to “reasons for optimism about our future,” such as the Double-A Birmingham Barons winning the Southern League title and the Single-A Kannapolis Cannon Ballers advancing to the Carolina League finals. The White Sox are ranked 11th in MLB's latest farm system rankings.

White Sox fans have been waiting for “progress through action” for a long time, and they're unlikely to be holding their breath after the franchise's recent blunders.

Chicago (41-121) finished the season by winning two of three games against the playoff-bound Detroit Tigers, including a 9-5 victory on Sunday, the final day of this miserable season.
