Would a trade between the Brooklyn Nets and Giannis Antetokounmpo be worth it?

Would a trade between the Brooklyn Nets and Giannis Antetokounmpo be worth it?

Here we go again.

Before trading Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks, the Brooklyn Nets considered using their future to bring another star to the franchise. Donovan Mitchell was the main target, but after the Cleveland Cavaliers guard signed a three-year, $150.3 million contract, Brooklyn focused on a complete rebuild.

Developing internal talent is a top priority for rookie head coach Jordi Fernandez, but few players in the league are worth a complete overhaul moving forward. Giannis Antetokounmpo is one of them.

According to Bill Reiter of CBS Sports, the Milwaukee Bucks star could soon be leaving the organization he has been a part of for over a decade. If he chooses this route, the Nets will be on his wish list.

“The teams I've heard are Miami and New York – the Nets, not the Knicks,” an Eastern Conference executive claimed in the CBS Sports report.

Brooklyn got burned in the infamous James Harden trade in 2021, a transaction that forced general manager Sean Marks to repurchase one of the Nets picks sent to the Houston Rockets for the then-disgruntled guard. The pairing didn't work out, the rest is history.

Would it really be worth it to have the resources to sign a player of Antetokounmpo's caliber? Granted, it's only five games in, but Brooklyn's early performances don't suggest a rebuilding team. The Nets have been competitive in every contest, perhaps indicating that things are changing quicker than expected.

It seems almost impossible to assess Antetokounmpo's value because the idea that he could be available is inherently crazy. If Marks feels the risk outweighs the reward, the former NBA Finals MVP could soon be playing at Barclays Center
