X loses the court battle with Australia and has to pay a fine

On Friday, the court dismissed the application by Ending a lawsuit that arose after Australia's eSafety Commissioner fined the platform for failing to adequately respond to inquiries about efforts to combat child abuse content. National law requires social media companies to explain how they meet basic online safety expectations.

The Australian government is putting increasing pressure on global tech companies to improve their police content. Last year, X, formerly known as Twitter, went to court to try to remove a violent video of a terrorist attack. And it announced it would introduce age limits for teenagers using social media.

Last month, Musk called the Australian government a “fascist” over proposed new laws to curb digital misinformation.

Under the proposed legislation, social media companies could be fined up to 5% of their annual revenue if they fail to take action to “manage the risk posed by misinformation and disinformation on digital communications platforms in Australia”.

X did not respond to inquiries sent to its media email addresses outside of normal business hours.
