Yankees fans are losing their minds over the ALDS announcers' duties against the KC Royals

This is how it works. As you advance into the MLB playoffs, national voices take the baton from the locals. Michael Kay is resigning from his post – because of course he has to call Tigers-Astros. Naturally. And if the Yankees advance past the ALDS, the flavor of local flavor will continue to dissipate as teams consolidate.

Instead of Paul O'Neill and David Cone – who is also still working! – The Yankees and Royals get the stylings of Ron Darling, who just finished a season with the crosstown Mets. Shaky, but good.

But that's not what's really captivating fans this week. While Brian Anderson travels to Cleveland, Bob Costas will do the play-by-play.

He is a broadcasting icon. He is incredibly sardonic. His commentary is full of humor and seriousness. And…the Stand isn't the best use of his talents at this stage of his career. At this point, it brings back fewer memories of Tony Tarasco in the 1996 ALDS (“And what is that?!”) and more memories of the 2019 postseason, an era defined by a random MLB Network showcase that no one else is after asked pleasant Tuesday evening.

Unfortunately, Yankee fans responded to the announcement with their typical attitude – no, sorry, typo, acting as if they were being asked to cut their own larynxes.

You know anti-Costas feelings are strong when fans care more about it than having a Met in the locker room.

We couldn't take care of it. With Costas it feels like the offseason – after all, we grew up with it.

The younger generation that does this not When you associate Costas with the NBC Peacock and shouts of “Team of the Decade!” Most successful franchise… of the century” can be traced back to a slightly different code. To put it kindly: They think of Costas the way Costas thinks of Pedro Strop.

Some of us kind of like that stuff, Nate! That's kind of how we got into baseball, NATE!

Hopefully the Yankees burn the Royals the way they handled the Twins in 2019, when Costas was also on the microphone to describe DJ LeMahieu efficiently clearing the bases.

And hopefully LeMahieu will be inactive this time.
